USA 275 Dominates First Day of Racing |
|
William Coberly and his team of Chad Coberly and Justin Dey used
boat speed and smarts to top the charts after the first race date
of the year. Sailing USA 275 “Insert Pig Name Here” they were able
to win two (2) out of three (3) races for the day.
The season kicked off with a very warm day for early May on Tawas
Bay. The issue was the wind, or lack of it. After floating around
for about an hour, we reluctantly started a race. The weather God
was with us as we were able to finish all three scheduled races.
On top of a beautiful day on Tawas Bay, were also had the whole bay
to ourselves, nary a boat in sight all day.
Race One (1)
1-5 knots of wind from the east/southeast. Water was smooth and it
was sunny. USA 838 with Chris, Jennifer, and Matt Princing were
able to lead the fleet back on the start toward the point. After
some sailing USA 838 worked up in height on USA 275 and tacked onto
port for what they thought was more breeze. It turned out to be a
good play as they sailed into more wind initially. USA 275 and USA
538 (Don Thwing and Chris Jacobson) kept going to the left and
found more breeze and a lefty, this quickly enabled them to close
the gap on USA 838 who led around the first mark and to the finish.

Race Two (2)
3-7 knots of wind out of the east/southeast. Water was smooth and
the sun was shining. The breeze was trying hard to fill in but did
not make it too far. Chad Coberly on the helm of USA 275 did a
masterful job of holding their boat on the line until the gun and
won the start leading the fleet off to the left with USA 538 right
behind them. USA 48 (Judd Lather and Cecilia Potts) were forced to
tack away. USA 838 was the first to tack back to the right as USA
48 came back to starboard after making a big gain. USA 275 and USA
538 were out to the far left. USA 838 tacked just short of the
layline and looked to be first at the mark, but a lee bow by USA
538 slowed them down. USA 838 trying to pin USA 538 out past the
port lay line enabled USA 275 to pass astern and essentially shut
them out at the mark. USA 538 followed by USA 275 led around the
mark. USA 275 passed USA 538 as spinnakers were set. They had a
nice fight down the spinnaker run but stayed in that order for the
rest of the race.

Race Three (3)
1-6 knots of wind out of the east/southeast. Water was smooth and
the sun was shining. The breeze now was getting sketchy again.
USA 275 won the start again and led to the important left corner.
USA 275 led at the first mark followed by USA 538, USA 838, and USA
48. On the first run all the boats got bunched up together and
were all within a boat length of each other at the leeward mark.
USA 275 tacked right away followed to the left by USA 838 a boat
length behind and to weather, USA 538 stayed on port tack as did
USA 48. With the wind spotty, it was anybody’s game. USA 275 got
the breeze first and went to full hike for the first time all day.
USA 275 opened up a 150-200 foot lead on USA 838 and went on to win
the race handily.

11:00am on the bay.
