Anti-Awine Sails to Victory on Glorious Day on the Bay |
|
A smooth bay and shifty winds were had by all on Saturday. With
the wind coming out of an easterly direction, Anti-Swine, USA 838,
won the first and the third race to win the day. After racing,
another successful cookout and beer session was enjoyed thanks to
Jennifer Princing.
Race One (1)
Water was smooth, wind was easterly around ten knots under overcast
skies. USA 838 blasted off the line going to the left with USA 275
going right. The early right paid off as USA 275 (Bill Coberly,
Gus Dey) took an early lead with USA 782 (Nick Seraphinoff, Joe,
Matt Princing) right behind them. USA 838 (Chris and Jennifer
Princing) and USA 48 (Judd Lather, Cecilia Potts and Tom Zoes) were
behind and to the left. USA 538 (Don Thwing, Chris Jacobson, Dan
Stoddard) were stuck on the starting mark. As the beat progressed,
USA 838 benefiting from a late lefty sneaked into the weather mark
ahead of USA 275. They were followed by USA 782 and USA 48. A
nice and puffy run saw all of the boats pile up at the leeward
mark. USA 838 went right this time early. Farther up the beat USA
838 kept tacking on little shifts to maintain her lead over USA
275, 48, and 782. With a good set at the top mark USA 838 held on
to record her second win of the season.

Race Two (2)
Water was smooth, wind out of the east at 12-14 knots under partly
sunny skies. USA 275 won the start and went right early, USA 782
went with them and USA 838 and 48 went to the left. The right paid
handsomely as USA 275 and USA 782 had a solid lead on the rest of
the fleet round the top mark. The spinnaker run was tight with USA
275, USA 782 neck and neck and USA 538, USA 838 and USA 48 about
five boat lengths behind. USA 275 rounded the leeward mark with
USA 782 right behind them. Up the second beat USA 838 was again
tacking a lot on the little shifts and was making up ground on the
two front runners. At the second weather mark USA 275 and USA 782
were still side by side and about four boat lengths ahead of USA
838. USA 838 gibed to the port side of the run and made big gains.
At the finish it was USA 275 beating an overlapped USA 782 by about
one foot and an overlapped USA 838 by half a boat length.

Race Three (3)
Water had a one foot chop with the wind easterly and blowing 15-18
knots, very puffy, and the sun was shining. USA 838 won the start
with USA 782 off to leeward. USA 782 quickly found her legs and
jumped off to a two boat length lead. USA 838 and USA 538 used a
lefty at the very top of the beat to close ground on USA 782. On
the run USA 782 lead USA 538 while USA 838 gibed over to port which
enabled them room at the leeward mark on USA 538. USA 782 showed
their upwind speed again by widening their lead now over USA 838 to
5 boat lengths. USA 782 lead to the final weather mark with USA
838 five lengths behind with USA 538 overlapped to weather. USA
838 gibed to port with USA 782 and USA 538 on the starboard gibe.
As the leg proceeded the wind took a rightward turn. USA 782 and
USA 538 chose to sail by the lee and USA 838, on port had a great
angle to the wind which enabled them to cross the finish line first
by a boat length over USA 782 and USA 538.
- USA 838 - Anti-Swine
- USA 782 - Pigs R Us
- USA 538 - Pig Dirty
- USA 48 - Porcine Accoutrements
- USA 275 - "Insert Pig Name Here"
Next week Team Tawas is taking two boats and heading off to

838 will try to represent Fleet 44 both on the race course and in
the bar! Racing resumes Saturday, May 31, 2003. Start will be
