The photo on the right was taken during one of the first Regatta's held on Tawas Bay in 1897. The large boat in the forefront  is the "Comanchee".  The owner Nicholas Harding also used the boat to commute back and forth between  Tawas Bay and Bay City. It was much faster to travel by water then over land in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Four generations later, his great grandchildren are still active
in Regatta's  held on the Bay.
Often during many of our early Regatta's large Schooner's were in Tawas Bay. This photo was taken in 1905 of a ship just off Tawas Point waiting to get loaded with lumber. Once loaded, off they would go on their journey between Detroit and Mackinaw.
Here's a photo of another Regatta on the bay in 1930.
This photo was taken Aug.1936 at the start of a Regatta, in 2nd place is the boat  "Yucatan" sail # Y7  Boat owner Harold C. Moeller and his crew.
And another 1936 photo of Harold C. Moeller and crew member Bill Mallon sailing the "Yucatan" on Tawas Bay. The Committee boat in the back ground was a U.S. Coast Guard boat.
The photo on the left is the Holland Hotel, this was the site for meetings, and Yacht Club gatherings. Many International Lighting Racers from around the world spent alot of time there. Our current site was picked in the mid 50's and construction began.
Here's a close up photo of  "Comanchee" from a previous page. Owner Nicholas Harding,  the great grandfather of Butch and Brent Babcock.
Another photo take in 1890's of a few Schooners waiting to get loaded with lumber in Tawas Harbor. Then off they would go to Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo.
The photo on the right was taken during a 1914 Labor Day parade, the route took them down Main St. right in front of the Old Holland Hotel. After the parade many spectators would head down to the bay and watch the afternoon races.
Here's a photo taken in 1905 on a Sunday afternoon. The excited spectators watch from the original Detroit to Mackinaw Railroad pier as the boat's are getting ready for a afternoon of racing.
The photo on the right was taken during one of our Regatta's on Tawas Bay in 1930. Anyone know the name of the boat and crew member's ?
